Chapter Four

How long she slept, she didn’t know. The heat of the fire warmed the small hut and made her drowsy. Comforted by the presence of Cob outside she had found her eyes growing heavy and sleep claimed her. But now she lay wide awake, unsure why. Something had penetrated her dreams. Sweet dreams filled with Cob touching her body, making her submit to him in every way. Now those dreams were like strands of smoke, clearing and dispersing to nothing.

Everything was dark, the hut had very small windows, they let in sufficient light in the day, but now they offered nothing. She knelt on the bed and moved towards the door, putting her ear to it to listen. At first she heard nothing, and then she heard the scuffling of feet. Were they Cob’s hooves on the forest floor? She couldn’t tell. Then she caught a low grunt, as though someone strained, trying to shove something aside. Panic rose in her chest. What if Cob had been attacked, what if he was hurt?

Strangely the fear had nothing to do with her own safety, only Cob’s. She couldn’t bear the thought of him being hurt, especially when it would be her fault. If those men had never taken her she would never have lured Cob into danger. She sat back on her heels, trying to decide what to do.

Cob had warned her to stay inside, going out might make matters worse.

She got off the bed and shuffled carefully over to the small window nearest her, trying not to bump into anything. It faced the wrong direction to look over the clearing but she had to try something.

Iona pressed her face against the window, cupping her eyes with her hands to help her see better. Another grunt, louder and nearer, frustratingly the sound seemed to be off to the other side of the hut.

She made her decision, she would go out and help him, if she were his mate they should stand together. Pulling hard she dragged the bed away from the door, the short legs scraped loudly in the quiet of the night.

“STAY INSIDE!” Cob’s voice rang angrily in her head. Relief poured over her, he was still alive.

Annoyed this way of communicating only passed one way she had to speak out loud. “Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Are you fighting?”

“Yes.”

“What are you fighting?”

“Something you don’t need to see.”

“Is there nothing I can do to help?”

“Yes! Stay quiet and stay inside!” Iona sat back on the bad, feeling like a scolded child. Frustrated she pressed her ear back against the door. A flicker of white caught her eye, flashing in front of the door. It was low down but if she crouched she could look through a gap in the wooden door, giving her a sliver of a view of the fight outside.

Cob’s white body passed by again, he turned and reared up, using his front hooves to beat down on some creature that moved low to the ground. Iona shifted around to try to get a better view of what Cob was fighting.
